About L'hair

What is L'hair?

L'hair is an ultra-premium hair extension brand offering raw, single-donor human hair in two installation methods: Tape-Ins and Keratin Tips. We do not sell the hair as a commodity. Each order begins with a consultation that matches the hair to the client - texture, density, tone, length, and intended wear - before the work is sent. Our clients are direct-to-consumer through this site, and our salon partners are accepted by application through our For Salons page.

What makes L'hair different from other extension brands?

The hair itself, and the way we sell it. Most hair extensions on the market — including most of what is marketed as "Remy" or "premium" - has been chemically processed: stripped of its natural color through extended acid baths, redyed in factory batches, and often coated in silicone to mask the cuticle damage from that process. L'hair hair has had none of this done to it. It is collected from a single donor with the cuticle fully intact and aligned, and it behaves the way the donor's hair behaved on her head including how it takes color, how it holds tone, how it ages, and how it falls. The price reflects what's required to source and verify hair that has not been altered.

Who is L'hair for?

L'hair is appropriate for clients who care about quality at a meaningful level and who are willing to participate in a consultative buying process rather than a one-click purchase. Many of our clients are former or current extension wearers who have grown tired of the synthetic-looking sheen and short lifespan of processed Remy. Many work with private stylists or trusted colorists rather than walk-in salons. If you are looking for the most affordable option in the category, L'hair is not it. If you are looking for extensions that behave like your own hair and survive proper coloring and care, L'hair is built for you.

Is the hair ethically sourced?

Yes. Our hair is sourced from a small network of donors whom we know by relationship, not from anonymous wholesale channels. Donors are compensated for their hair at rates substantially above the industry standard. We are happy to discuss sourcing in more detail during the consultation; verifiable provenance is one of the things four-figure pricing buys you.

The Hair

What does "raw" hair actually mean?

Raw refers to hair that has not been chemically processed in any way: no color stripping, no factory dye, no perming, no chemical relaxing, no silicone coating. The hair is exactly as it grew on the donor's head, with the natural pigment, the natural texture, the natural variation strand-to-strand, and the cuticle intact and aligned in one direction.

What's the difference between raw and Remy hair?

Remy refers only to cuticle alignment - that the strands face the same root-to-tip direction. Remy says nothing about whether the hair has been chemically treated. In practice, most commercially available Remy hair has been soaked in an acidic decolorizing bath to remove its natural pigment, then redyed in factory batches to achieve uniform shades. This makes it consistent and inexpensive but fundamentally changes the hair's chemistry. Raw hair includes the Remy quality (intact, aligned cuticles) and adds the unprocessed condition. All raw hair is Remy. Most Remy hair is not raw.

Why does single-donor matter?

When hair is collected from multiple donors and combined, the strands have different natural color, different porosity, different density per strand, and different behavior under color or heat. Manufacturers compensate by chemically processing the mixed hair to look uniform - which is most of why processed Remy looks plasticky. Single-donor hair has the consistency that comes from one head: it is meant to move and respond together. It also makes coloring predictable, because the stylist is working with one chemistry, not an unknown blend.

Has L'hair been processed in any way?

No chemical processing. No acid bath. No factory color. No silicone coating. The only thing done to the hair after collection is gentle cleaning. The cuticle is fully intact when the hair reaches your stylist.

Where does the hair come from?

Our donors are based in a small region of Eastern Europe known historically for fine, healthy, naturally multi-tonal brunette hair. We work with the same network across batches, which is part of how we maintain consistency. We can provide more specific sourcing detail upon request during consultation - we don't publish the exact villages, for the donors' privacy, but we are transparent with clients who ask.

Choosing Your Method

What's the difference between Tape-Ins and Keratin Tips?

Tape-Ins are 1.5-inch polyurethane tabs of raw hair, applied in pairs that sandwich a thin slice of the client's natural hair near the root. They lie flat against the scalp, take less time to install, and are reusable across multiple installations. They suit a client who wants a method that's gentler to maintain over time and easier for the stylist to move up as the natural hair grows.

Keratin Tips are individual strands of raw hair bonded at the root with a small heat-fused keratin polymer tip, hand-rolled by the stylist around a small section of the client's natural hair. The bonds are translucent and nearly invisible at conversational distance. They suit a client who wants the most discreet installation, the longest individual wear cycle, and the most flexible styling.

Which method should I choose?

That's exactly what the consultation is for. The answer depends on your hair density, your scalp sensitivity, your styling habits, your time commitment, and what you want the extensions to do. In broad strokes: Tape-Ins are more forgiving and faster to install, Keratin Tips are more discreet and more individual in their movement. Both methods use the same raw hair - the difference is how it attaches.

Can I use both methods?

In rare cases, yes - some stylists combine methods on one head when a client wants Keratin Tips through the visible areas and Tape-Ins to add weight in less visible sections. This is uncommon and only recommended for clients with specific styling needs. The consultation will tell you whether it makes sense for you.

Which method looks more natural?

Both look natural when installed by a skilled stylist using raw hair. Keratin Tips have a slight edge in pure invisibility because the bonds are individual strands rather than horizontal tabs - there's no possible visible line of installation. Tape-Ins are essentially invisible when the natural hair covers the tab row, but the tab geometry exists. For most clients, the difference is not perceptible at conversational distance with either method.

Which method is gentler on my hair?

When properly installed and removed, both are gentle. Damage from extensions is almost always a function of installation or removal technique, not the method itself. Tape-Ins use an adhesive that releases with a specific solvent; Keratin Tips use a heat-softened polymer that releases with a different solvent. A skilled stylist removes either method without damaging the natural hair. An unskilled stylist can damage hair with either. This is why the right stylist matters as much as the right method.

The Consultation Process

Why is there an intake form instead of an "Add to Cart" button?

Hair extensions at this quality level are not a commodity purchase. The wrong color match, the wrong density, the wrong length, or the wrong method on the wrong hair type produces an unsatisfying result regardless of how good the hair is. We use a brief consultation to make sure we send the right hair the first time. It also means we can advise against ordering if your situation isn't right for L'hair - which sometimes happens.

What happens during the consultation?

You complete a short intake covering your current hair (color, texture, length, density, prior coloring), your goals, and your preferred installation method. You upload reference photos. A consultant reviews your intake personally, usually within two business days, and responds with recommendations, questions, or a draft order. Once you confirm, the order goes into production. Communication continues through delivery and installation if needed.

How long does the entire process take?

From intake submission to delivery, typically two to four weeks depending on whether the exact match is in stock or requires custom sourcing. Faster timelines are sometimes possible. The intake itself takes about ten minutes to complete.

What if my hair doesn't match anything you offer?

It happens. Raw, single-donor hair has narrower available shade ranges than processed extensions, because we don't dye it to fill out a palette. If your specific tone isn't a match in current stock and isn't worth custom sourcing for your timeline, we'll tell you honestly. We would rather lose a sale than send hair that won't blend.

Can I order without going through the consultation?

No. The consultation is the order process. Skipping it would almost guarantee a poor match for at least some clients, which is not how we want to do business.

Color, Styling, and Daily Wear

Can the hair be colored?

Yes - and this is one of the major reasons clients choose L'hair. Because the cuticle is intact and the hair has never been chemically processed, it accepts color the same way bio hair does. A skilled colorist can use the same formula on your extensions as on your natural hair and achieve consistent results. Most processed Remy hair cannot do this; it requires separate formulas because its chemistry has already been altered at the factory.

Can the hair be bleached?

Within reason, yes. Raw hair survives lifting better than processed Remy because the protein structure is intact. We still recommend that any bleaching be done by a colorist experienced with extensions, and that lifting be undertaken with care — bleach is still bleach, and any chemical service shortens lifespan to some degree. Many clients order L'hair already at the desired tone to avoid lifting entirely.

Will the color fade?

All hair color fades with washing and sun exposure, including the color on your own hair. Raw hair holds color comparable to bio hair, which is to say significantly better than processed hair, which loses factory-deposited color quickly. A glaze or toner refresh every few months keeps depth consistent.

Can I heat-style it?

Yes. The hair handles flat irons, curling irons, and hot tools the same way natural hair does. We recommend using a heat protectant and staying below 400°F, which is good practice for your own hair as well.

Will it tangle?

Properly cared for, no. The cuticle is aligned in one direction (the definition of Remy quality, which all raw hair has), which prevents the friction-induced tangling you get with non-Remy hair. Tangling at the root area can happen if extensions are not brushed regularly or are worn to bed without being secured - same as long natural hair.

Care, Longevity, and Maintenance

How long will my extensions last?

With proper care, L'hair extensions last considerably longer than processed alternatives because the hair itself is structurally sound and doesn't degrade the way pre-bleached hair does. Tape-Ins are typically worn for 6-8 weeks before being moved up (and the hair itself is reusable across 2-3 installations). Keratin Tips are worn for 3-4 months per installation and the hair survives multiple cycles when reapplied. With careful handling, the same raw hair can serve a client for a year or more across multiple installations.

How do I wash my extensions?

Use sulfate-free, silicone-free shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner. Wash in the direction the hair falls, never rough or upside-down. Avoid getting shampoo directly at the bond line — wash from the mid-lengths down. Detailed aftercare is covered on our Aftercare page and provided with every order.

Can I swim with them?

Yes, with care. Wet your hair with clean water before swimming so the strands absorb fresh water rather than chlorinated or salt water. Wear hair up if possible, rinse immediately after, and condition. Repeated chlorine exposure dulls any hair, including bio hair, and aggressive saltwater exposure accelerates wear.

Can I work out?

Yes. Tie hair up or braid it before exercising to reduce sweat exposure at the bond line. Wash within a few hours of an intense workout to prevent salt and oil buildup.

Can I sleep with them?

Yes. We recommend a loose braid or low ponytail to prevent tangling, and a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Sleeping with hair loose is fine occasionally but accelerates wear over time.

Are there products I should avoid?

Anything containing alcohol near the bonds (it weakens both tape adhesive and keratin polymer), heavy oils at the root (they migrate down into the bonds), and sulfate-heavy clarifying shampoos. We can recommend specific products during consultation.

Installation and Removal

Who installs L'hair extensions?

A licensed stylist trained in the relevant method. We do not install extensions ourselves - we provide the hair, and the installation is done by the stylist of your choosing or one of our salon partners. If you don't have a stylist, we can refer you to a salon partner in your city through the consultation process.

Do I need to find my own stylist?

If you have a stylist you trust who is experienced with the method you've chosen, use them. If you don't, we can refer. Our partner stylists are independently verified by us and trained on L'hair specifically.

How long does installation take?

Tape-Ins: 1-2 hours for a typical full installation. Keratin Tips: 3-5 hours for a typical full installation, depending on density and the number of bonds. Maintenance appointments (moving up tape-ins, or replacing shed keratin tips) are shorter.

How do L'hair extensions get removed?

Each method has its own removal process. Tape-Ins are released with a specific solvent applied to the adhesive strip; the strips slide out without pulling. Keratin Tips are released with a different solvent that softens the bond, allowing the stylist to gently break the polymer and slide the extension free. Both removals are done by a stylist, not at home, and both leave the natural hair intact when done correctly.

Will my natural hair be damaged?

When installation and removal are done correctly, no. Damage occurs from poor installation (bonds placed too tight or too close to the scalp), bonds left in beyond their wear cycle (resulting in matting at the root), or removal that pulls the bonds out instead of dissolving them. This is why the stylist matters as much as the hair.

Investment, Shipping, and Returns

Why does L'hair cost what it does?

Three reasons. First, the hair itself: raw, single-donor hair from verified sources is genuinely scarce and is collected in small quantities by relationship, not in bulk. Second, the lack of processing: most extension hair is cheap to manufacture because the volume processing also masks lower-quality source hair. We can't and don't do that. Third, the consultative model: every order is reviewed by a person, every match is hand-selected, every issue is handled personally rather than through a return portal. The pricing reflects the actual cost of doing this work to this standard.

How long does shipping take?

Domestic US: 2-3 business days from production completion. International: 5-10 business days depending on customs. Production lead time varies from immediate (if your match is in stock) to several weeks (for custom sourcing). Specific timelines are confirmed during the consultation before any payment is taken.

Can I return my order?

Because each order is matched to a specific client and the hair is custom-prepared, returns are evaluated case-by-case rather than offered as a blanket policy. If something is wrong on our end - a mismatch from what was agreed in consultation, a quality issue, hair that doesn't behave as it should — we make it right, either by replacement or refund. If you've changed your mind about a correctly-fulfilled order, we work with you to find a resolution. We do not have surprise restocking fees, and we don't penalize honest feedback.

Do you offer a warranty?

We stand behind the hair for its expected lifespan when properly cared for. If you experience excessive shedding, premature breakage, or other quality issues within the first 90 days of installation, contact us and we'll evaluate. Damage from improper installation, removal, or care isn't covered, but we'll always look at what happened and help where we reasonably can.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We currently ship to the United States, Canada, the UK, the EU, Switzerland, Australia, and the UAE. Other destinations available by request. International orders require slightly extended consultation timelines for shipping logistics and customs.
